In 2004, an important new green turtle rookery was dicovered in Syria. Follow up work discovered sea turtles are being utilised as food in the country and are being negatively impacted by fisheries interaction. In 2006 we are continuing the vital work from the last years and tracking a green turtle to identify her internesting habitat and post breeding migration. This was originally planned for 2005 but not realised due to the low nesting levels that year.

Little is known of the foraging turtles in Amvrakikos Bay. We have tag returns from turtles that have nested at the three nearby Ionian nesting areas, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Kyparissia Bay, but when they come and go and where they move around in the bay was unknown. This project has helped to answer some of these important conservation issues.

The turtles tracked in this project are of the first loggerheads to be tracked during their postnesting migration from a Greek nesting beach. The project is carried out by the division of Conservation Biology of the University of Berne (Switzerland) in collaboration with ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece. Zakynthos is the largest known sea turtle nesting area of the Mediterranean, hosting about 1/4 of all known loggerhead nesting in the Mediterranean. The nesting beaches of Zakynthos are monitored by ARCHELON since 1983.
